MOS Completes First Phase of Pond Construction
In early July, a few dedicated volunteers gathered to begin clearing trees and brush in anticipation of pond construction. Shortly after that, contractors rolled in heavy equipment and by the end of July the .75 acre pond basin was completed. With each rainfall, the water level rises slightly and we are hopeful that the basin will be filled by Spring. Now comes the second phase of pond development. Grass has been planted and various trees and plant life will be selected and planted to prevent erosion. MOS has already applied for a solar demonstration project that would provide solar powered aerators to oxygenate the water. Hopefully this grant will be approved. We are still in need of help and donations to finish the pond landscaping and to stock it with fish. Additionally, MOS needs to raise still about $5, which currently owes on the original construction. If you know someone that may be interested in helping with this project or if you would like to make a monetary donation, please email us at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For some time now, one of the dreams of the Mohican Outdoor School has been to develop their own pond large enough to do pond studies, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, and ornithology studies. Additionally, the pond will be used to teach various recreational activities such as canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Thank you to everyone who has assisted with helping Mohican achieve yet another dream!
