Why pollinators matter, who they are, and how to protect them. One in every three bites of food we take can be tracked back to animal pollinators. Who are these vital creatures, what exactly do they do, and how are they threatened across the globe?

1:00 pm            Introduction to Square Foot Gardening: Pollinator Gardening in a Raised Bed

Do you (or someone you know) want to garden, but are simply overwhelmed by the thought of just getting started?  You might live in town and think you don’t have enough space, or perhaps you have plenty of space, but don’t know where to start… Do I have the tools I need?  Where should I place my garden?  What type of soil do I have?  What should I plant?  I tried gardening before and nothing grew!

Square Foot Gardening is a raised-bed method of gardening made simple enough for anyone to succeed!  This method requires only 20% of the space of a conventional garden, uses 10% of the water and 5% of the seeds, and requires 2% of the work required in a conventional garden.  Sound too good to be true?  This presentation will provide you with an overview of this gardening method, the basics of constructing a Square Foot Garden bed, and ideas of what your Square Foot Garden can be!  Pollinator plants will be a focus of this adult-audience presentation.

                         Pollinator Gardening for Kids

Children will learn about pollinators and make a starter garden.

3:00 pm            Wildflower Hike

Join a Mohican Outdoor School staff member for an exploratory    hike of the MOS site to find spring wildflowers.

Sunday

1:00  pm           Spring Hemlock Falls Hike

Take a hike along the historic and scenic Hemlock Falls trail and learn about its unique natural history and folklore. This hike has sections of trail with rugged, rocky terrain, and may not be suitable for the very young or those with physical limitations. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Meet at Hemlock Falls Center porch, 5391 Bunkerhill North Road.
